FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. It is an independent certification that tracks fiber from the forest through every company that handles it, a chain of custody, so a certified sheet can be traced back to forests managed to standards covering replanting, biodiversity, water, and the rights of workers and local communities.
The certification follows the paper through the mill, the merchant and the printer. To carry the FSC logo, a printed piece has to be produced by a printer with chain of custody certification, or through a certified partner.
The three FSC labels
- FSC 100%: all of the fiber comes from FSC certified forests.
- FSC Recycled: all of the fiber is reclaimed, recycled material.
- FSC Mix: a combination of certified, recycled and controlled fiber.
FSC and recycled paper
FSC certification and recycled content answer different questions. FSC tells you where the fiber came from and that it can be traced. The post-consumer percentage tells you how much of it was used paper. The stocks we run most are both FSC certified and high in post-consumer content, and each one is listed on our paper stocks page.
Ask which certified stocks suit your job when you request a quote, and we will confirm what can appear on the finished piece. Our guide to what FSC certified means covers the labels in more detail.
